But for many villagers in rural Nepal, a lack of education hinders their knowledge and ability to live healthy and ward off preventable diseases.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to a 3-year grant from <a title=\"Irish Aid\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishaid.ie\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><em>Irish Aid<\/em><\/strong><\/a> and <a title=\"Effect hope\" href=\"http:\/\/effecthope.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em><strong>effect:hope The Leprosy Mission Canada<\/strong><\/em><\/a>, Nepal Leprosy Trust Ireland\u00a0is now supporting some of the very poorest in Nepal to live more productive lives in a project called <em><strong>Village Alive Programme<\/strong><\/em> \u00a0or VAP.<\/p>\n<p>NLT has organised groups in two Dalit villages (a group of people traditionally regarded as untouchable) to effect and promote health improvements. After training and support from NLT staff, a volunteer in each village qualifies as a Rural Health Facilitator, who helps the groups to identify major health problems and tackle them through health education: the use of clean water, and improved sanitation.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_162\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-162\" style=\"width: 474px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/nlt.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/waterpump.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-162 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/nlt.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/waterpump-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"village water pump\" width=\"474\" height=\"316\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nlt.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/waterpump-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.nlt.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/waterpump-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 474px) 100vw, 474px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-162\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo: Vera \u00a9 NLT Ireland 2014<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The project also includes a micro-finance element, which encourages men and women to develop their own small businesses.<\/p>\n<p>Measurements will be taken to gauge the success of the project, and it is hoped that the\u00a0long term\u00a0incidence of Leprosy will reduce as a result of improvements in the standard of living.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Drinking clean water, washing your hands, seeking treatment for infections: such things\u00a0may be second nature in Ireland.
